Specialist Owen David Witt, a 20-year-old soldier from the small town of Sand Springs, Montana, died on May 24, 2004, when his armored HMMWV rolled over near Ad Dawr, Iraq. Assigned to the 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment (1st Infantry Division), Owen had enlisted after high school with a clear sense of purpose—to serve his country and protect others.
Known for his quiet determination and close bonds with comrades—who called him “our little brother Witt”—Owen was conducting security and patrol operations during a volatile period of the Iraq War when the accident occurred. His death, though non-hostile, happened in the line of duty amid the demands of deployment.
