Sergeant Nathaneil G. Irish, age 23, from Billings, passed away due to a non-combat related incident that took place at Camp Taji, Iraq on Sunday, October 27, 2019. He was born on June 28, 1996, in Phoenix, Arizona, and was raised by his mother, Kathy Depriest Gordon, and his stepfather, Jerrold Gordon. Nathan lived in various places throughout his life, including Arizona, Montana, Alaska, and Texas. He completed his education in the Young Marines and Montana Youth Challenge programs before joining the National Guard.
Nathan enlisted in the National Guard in 2013, where he was assigned to the 25th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Fort Wainwright, Alaska. He was deployed to Iraq to support Operation Inherent Resolve. In 2015, Nathan joined the U.S. Army and served at Fort Bliss, Texas, before being stationed at Fort Wainwright in November 2018. Additionally, he served in Kuwait from October 2017 to July 2018.
Nathan was a non-commissioned officer responsible for small arms and artillery repair. He received multiple awards throughout his time in the Army, including two Army Commendation Medals, three Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Nathan married Mercedes Holm on June 1, 2019, in Denali National Park. He enjoyed traveling, playing video games on his Xbox, and working on his cars.
