Lance Corporal Kane Michael Funke, a 20-year-old Marine, was killed by an incendiary device during combat operations in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, on August 13, 2004. Kane spent his final high school years in Vancouver, Washington, but his roots and family connections resonated with Montana’s spirit of service. He enlisted in the Marines with a dream of purpose and honor, fulfilling that ambition with pride and resolve.
Assigned to his unit in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Kane was engaged in intense counter-insurgency operations when the explosion occurred. His death was deeply mourned by his family and comrades, who remembered him as someone who died doing exactly what he wanted—serving with dedication and commitment.
Kane’s sacrifice exemplifies the quiet heroism of young Americans who step forward in time of need. His courage and dedication continue to inspire, and he is forever honored for the life he gave in defense of freedom.
