A fallen hero from Great Falls has left a legacy of hard work, dedication, and loyalty. Spc. Jonathan A. Pilgeram, 22, passed away on February 17, 2011, in Kunar province, Afghanistan while fighting for his country. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky.
Pilgeram was a 2007 Centerville High School graduate and was remembered for his strong work ethic and commitment to his goals. Matt McCale, Centerville High principal, recalls Pilgeram’s dedication to his studies and his family’s ranch. Pilgeram worked with cows and picked up bales at the tender age of nine, and he continued to work on the family ranch throughout his teenage years.
While Pilgeram briefly played football for the Miners team, he stopped playing to focus on the family ranch. Pilgeram was a country boy at heart and found his true calling when he joined the military. He was fully committed to his duties and his country and was excited to serve in Afghanistan.
McCale wrote letters of recommendation for Pilgeram to join the military and spoke with him last summer while he was on leave. Pilgeram shared his experiences and stories from the front lines, including his involvement in combat situations. McCale asked Pilgeram if he ever got scared, and Pilgeram replied that he had a job to do, and he was going to do it.
Pilgeram’s loyalty extended to his friends, school, and country. He was always willing to help out and had a big smile on his face. His small community was shocked and saddened by his death, but they are proud of his service and sacrifice. Centerville High School plans to honor Pilgeram and his legacy, and they are grateful for a true American hero.
