Conflict: Operation Iraqi Freedom
Montana has gained another hero in the war on terror. U.S. Marine Jeremy Scott Sandvick Monroe, 20, of Darby, gave his life in service to his country on Sunday in Iraq, where he was one of three Marines killed in action in the western province of Anbar. Monroe, a lance corporal with the 2/3 Echo Company 4th Platoon, was serving his second tour of duty.
Monroe was a true patriot who knew from a young age that he wanted to serve his country. He enlisted in the Marine Corps right out of high school, hopping on the bus bound for Butte just hours after his graduation commencement, skipping even his family celebration. He was a fine young man who loved to play rock music on his guitar and was a skilled musician. He also loved the mountains and camping.
On his last trip home in August, Monroe laid out his burial plans – just in case. But he didn’t want to believe it would happen. Despite knowing the risks, he had the courage to continue serving his country, defending the freedoms that we hold dear.
Monroe’s bravery and dedication to his country have not gone unnoticed. The Marine Corps has shown its admiration for him by helping comfort his family. His commander called him a “very ferocious warrior, an outstanding Marine, and an exceptional young man.” The family has received calls from all over the world, providing comfort during this difficult time.
