In October 1983, a power struggle in Grenada resulted in the installation of a communist-leaning government, increasing tensions in the region. In response, neighboring nations requested U.S. intervention. Three strikingly swift invasions, known as Operation Urgent Fury, was a swiftly organized effort that brought together paratroopers, Marines, Rangers, and special operations forces. Within a short period of time, over a thousand American troops had seized control of the entire island, taking numerous military and civilian prisoners, including a significant number of Cubans who had been involved in the construction of a large military airstrip.
