Captain Edward Matthew Saltz, a 27-year-old Army officer from Bigfork, Montana, was killed by an improvised explosive device that struck his convoy in Baghdad on December 22, 2003. Assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment (1st Armored Division), Ed was conducting operations to stabilize Iraq in the early months of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
A graduate of Bigfork High School (where he captained the football team) and Montana State University, Ed brought leadership, dedication, and care for his soldiers to his role. His death came during a period of rising roadside attacks, underscoring the ongoing dangers of the mission after major combat operations.
Posthumously honored for his service, Ed’s sacrifice is a reminder of the courage Montana’s sons bring to distant lands.
