Conflict: Operation Just Cause - Panama
First Lieutenant John Russell Hunter, a skilled Army aviator from Libby, Montana, gave his life piloting an AH-6G Little Bird attack helicopter during the intense opening hours of Operation Just Cause in Panama. Born in Libby on January 28, 1959, John entered the Army in 1976 and advanced with determination and skill. He served as a mission pilot and assistant S3 with Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Group (Airborne), based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On December 20, 1989, while supporting the invasion to remove Manuel Noriega from power, John’s helicopter came under heavy enemy fire during operations in Panama City. He was killed in action at age 30, one of the early casualties of the mission. For his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity under fire, he was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and other honors.
John’s service embodied the quiet resolve of a Montana native committed to duty and excellence. His sacrifice helped secure a swift victory in Panama, restoring democratic governance and protecting American interests. Though his time was cut short, his bravery left an indelible mark on comrades and the nation he served. Montana and the United States remain forever grateful for his valor and the ultimate price he paid in defense of freedom.
